Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups (440g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar (optional, for a slight sweetness)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and active dry yeast.
  2. Add the warm water, olive oil, and honey (if using), stirring until the mixture forms a sticky dough.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  5. Gently punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf or roll.
  6. Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and make shallow slashes across the top of each loaf.
  7. Let the dough rise for an additional 20 minutes while the oven heats.
  8. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Let the bread cool slightly before slicing.
