Boiled Bread Rolls – Soft and Chewy Homemade Buns

This is a recipe for Boiled Bread Rolls(also known as Water Bread or Boiled Buns). The process involves boiling the dough before baking, which gives the bread a unique texture and crust.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (for boiling water)
  • 6 cups (1.5L) water (for boiling)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • Sesame or mixed seeds for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Add the yeast mixture and oil. Mix until a dough forms.
    • Knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Rolls:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Shape them into round rolls.
    • Let them rest for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Boil the Dough:
    • Bring 6 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Add baking soda.
    • Gently drop the dough balls into the boiling water and let them float for about 30–40 seconds per side.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake the Rolls:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Brush the rolls with egg wash for a golden color (optional).
    • Sprinkle with sesame or mixed seeds if desired.
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the rolls cool on a wire rack before serving.
